After graduating from Stanford University, we acquire doctorate in Harvard University in 1972. After having taken birch in Harvard University, University of Oregon, we worked in Sophia University comparison culture subject (existing international college of liberal arts) from 1980 and were in charge of class of history of until retirement at the age limit of 2010 in Japanese pre-modern. Chief editor of academic journal "monyumenta niponika" served from 1997 to 2010, too. Leading feature the theme of Hakuseki Arai and late Mito study, and specialty is working on study of history of Shinto in the Meiji era now in particular in Sophia University, Yasukuni shrine fault worship case and the Edo latter period in 1932 in the thought history in the early modern times.

Shinto shrine, church, nation
"kyo" and boundary line of "religion"

Probably, in the history of Shinto shrine before the war, problem to become issue most is definition of property of Shinto shrine. Is Shinto shrine religious facility? Preparatory course student of Sophia University was led in Yasukuni shrine in 1932 and, from viewpoint to be religious, broke off, and several people did not perform worship. The government took point of view that Shinto shrine was not religious facility adversely, but, until this point in time, we relied in having been under management of bureaucrat organization whom Shinto shrine and religious group were different in in proof of the position mainly and avoided that we showed official views that entered about acts that were actually performed in Shinto shrine. However, the Ministry of Education turns previous posture that non-worship of student of Sophia is the beginning, and situation comes to become complicated, and to break the difficult situation and will announce opinion about contents of worship. We declared that salute that purpose that Shinto shrine let you visit was demanded students from based on educational reason at place of worship showed patriotism and the loyalty. We were going to make room for compromise by putting focus into "education" from "religion", but it cannot be said that underlying problem was got over. Idea of "kyo" lied behind for "education", but "kyo" in traditional thought of East Asia and relations with Shinto shrine were discussed since before concept of religion (religion) was introduced from the West, and that got twisted up with Shinto shrine and problem about relations of "religion". It will be effective to consider former debate to understand significance of process of Yasukuni shrine non-worship case of 1932 and subsequent correspondence. In addition, it is thought that objection gives suggestion in much "State Shintoism" problem.
